In WI about 2005 we got use value taxation on cropland and tax on it went from $15-20 /acre to $5-6/acre and land value and rents went up a lot . Problem is that rest of tax has to come from houses, buildings, and non crop land and state aid. Our property tax rate is about $20/thousand assessed valuation and our state income tax is pretty high (one retired school teacher friend just moved to FL to avoid it). Township no longer has enough money to keep up roads properly and politicians won't raise fuel taxes for road aid. We can get a homestead tax credit of $1500-2000. A $200,000 house on 1 acre will pay about $4000 tax and a 160 acre livestock farm about $5000 with the credit. 500 acres of good cropland will pay only $3000.
