Spraying wheat with Roundup isn’t a common practice most years, but under certain harvest conditions, I have seen it done. If for whatever reason the field of wheat is maturing at a uneven rate, a shot of Roundup will end the season for both the ripe and non ripe grain heads. Much the same as cutting with a swather, and combining with a pickup head, all the grain threshes out at the same moisture. Another reason for spraying Roundup would be if the crop had become over grown with weeds in some places. Once dead, the green weeds will go through the direct cut combine without plugging the cylinder or dumping green junk into the grain tank. Around here it is used as a means to save a crop, not a regular practice. As many broadcast red clover on wheat stands in March, so the red clover can grow after the wheat harvest, and add nitrogen to the soil. Spraying pre harvest would knock out the red clover too.

The advice is timeless... so although it isn't necessarily antique tractor related, it will be prominently displayed in our archives to honor those who have the courage to ask and those who have the courage to respond in an honest, positive manner.
