I did my beans yesterday. Use an old Dearborn hoe that's been modified from 3pt to pull type. It's old, worn completely out, and held together with baling wire and a prayer but it still gets the job done. Just told the Mrs. yesterday that if I could find a nicer one I'd buy it, but they're hard to come by around here since most people don't cultivate anymore. I use my hoe more for crust busting (especially lately, got 2 inches of rain in 3 hours on Sunday) than weed control, but I do notice a difference when I don't use it. As far as chemicals, I've used Atrazine on my corn with decent results, as well as 2,4-D. I always try to "lay it by" around the first week of July, so it gets cultivated at least twice by that time on top of the chemicals. I'm not aware of anything for a pre-emergent on beans though.

But, on the other hand, there is a secret language that our mechanical companions readily do speak. It is an interesting form of communication that involves all the senses of the listener. In this series we are going to investigate and learn the basic rudimentary skills of understanding this lingo.
