I have rebuilt three of those engines in the past few years. One had 14,000 hours on it before a connecting rod cap off and threw a rod, one spun a rod bearing and one blew a head gasket and the owner let it set too long before fixing it. The one that threw the rod, I had to get a replacement block from a salvage yard, cost me $1000.00 for a bare block. The only problem I found was when reassembling these engines that the rings were extremely hard and brittle. I actually broke 2 while installing them on the pistons. I know how to install rings. I have rebuilt hundreds of engines and have all the proper tools. That said, broken rings could be the problem. As far as the three I have rebuilt they are all still running fine.
