You are ABSOLUTELY CORRECT. The only difference in the process is the yellow or bronze colored dye pigment used in the last plating bath to give the gold color. There IS a ROHS compliant zinc plating that has FIVE TIMES as long of salt spray booth protection as the now typically gold plating. Gold plating is 16 hours, ROHS compliant silver or CLEAR zinc is 80 hours. One of the last HUGE projects I had at work was getting ALL the zinc plated steel stampings ROHS Certified. Engineering said they (He) wanted a color, like Blue on the stamping to identify it as ROHS compliant, I told him the shiny silver, almost like chrome plating means ROHS compliant. He said Fine, but I want a color, and blue is our corporate color. Then I assured him that there was absolutely NO way that was ever going to happen. I went and talked to the VP of Engineering and the Engineering Manager and they agreed the shiny silver was fine. And I never heard another word about blue stampings.
