theres one thing not mentioned. that is a better higher grade oil but also contains much more detergent. that is both goodand badin respectto the fact that those old flat tappet camsrelied on splash oiling and those higher detergent oils are very prone toclean the oilfilm from the cam and lifters. these systems were designed to operate in an era where a film of oil was splashed onto the cam and lifters and developed a wear barrier between the metal on metal components resulting in lubrication even though oil was not actually supplied there. A high detergent oil is necessary in diesels in order to compensate for the soot content developed from the reaction of diesel, combustion gases, temperature cycles, and the general reaction of oil and soot making sulfuric acid. Gasoline engines are not prone to this however the shear effect of gasoline engines and the different type of combustion means the oil is broken down differently.
Is that oil adequate for protection in cold starts? yes is that oil adequate for high temperature protection? yes The down fall is that oil is cleaning everything in the engine, even the cam shaft and lifter surfaces,it doesn't know what it is cleaning it just cleans. There in lies the question. is that oil cleaning too much from the small membrane of film that resides on those surfaces? it takes timeto find out. some times you are fine, sometimes you arent. I ruined one gasoline engine and learned the expensive way. Old flat tappet gasoline engines tend to be finewith conventional gasoline motor oil weighted for the temperature.

There is no known history regarding its origins or what service it had done, but the following work was undertaken alone to bring it up to show standard. From the engine number, it was found that this Major was produced late 1946. It was almost complete but had various parts that would definitely need replacing.
