The gland does not tighten by turning. It is held in by snap rings. The seal rings on the outside of the gland are likely leaking by. Go to jdparts.com, search 146 and you can access the parts book to see the snap rings in the cylinder parts drawing. If I remember right one should be visible now, remove it then tap the gland into the cylinder a bit. That should make the snap ring in the groove in the barrel visible to remove. Use the rod and piston to pop the gland out of the barrel. Check/smooth any ridges that may have formed at the snap ring groove in the barrel before reassembling. The gland chucking against the snap ring in the barrel causes that.
