1) If its a 240 motor but you're only sending it 120 SLOWWWWWWWWW PERFORMANCE LOL

To your question "How do I check a 3 wire 240 volt circuit to see if I have 240 volts like I should or what else could it be as it worked good before!"

2) A proper "3 wire 240 Volt circuit" that has NO NEUTRAL NOT INTENDED TO SUPPLY 120 would consist of 2 Hots L1 & L2 (Red & Black) plus a Bare/Green Equipment Grounding Conductor. NOTE I said Bare/Green Equipment Grounding Conductor NOTTTTTTTTTTT White Neutral. If a modern appliance (say maybe a dryer) requires BOTH 120 and 240 it now takes FOUR wires, 2 Hots, Neutral, Ground..............

3) HOWEVER if you accidentally switched/supplied the 240 volt motor with only ONE of the Hots (Red or Black, L1 or L2) and the Equipment Grounding Conductor (or a Neutral) THAT WOULD ONLY BE 120 VOLTS and it would run slow or not at all !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

4) You asked but I'm sure you know how to measure the voltage, it would read 240 across L1 & L2 (Red n Black) but only 120 from EITHER Red or Black to the Equipment Grounding Conductor (or a Neutral).

5) I have no idea if the third wire ran out is a Neutral (typically insulated White) or an Equipment Grounding Conductor (typically Bare/Green) but REGARDLESS the voltages above are the same as the N and G are bonded in the main panel. NEVER NEVER SWAP OR SUBSTITUTE OR MIX N MATCH NEUTRAL AND GROUND

6) A true 240 ONLY motor that uses no 120 3 wire circuit would be TWO HOTS and Ground

I THINK YOU WIRED IT WRONG AND ITS ONLY SEEING 120 VOLTS such as its wired to ONE HOT and Ground


NOTE when switching a 240 volt motor you should switch BOTH HOTS dont just cut/switch one of them.

NOTE that 240 volt circuit would be protected by a TWO POLE 240 Volt breaker...

PS since its an Electric question you may get a ton of responses (typically do) and Im sure I missed or forgot something so hopefully the other sparkies can add more to this..... or maybe we all agree ???? if so yayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
