My single-wire alternator is the same way. It doesn't start charging until the first time I go over 1/2 throttle. After that it charges as long as the engine runs at any speed (until the battery is fully charged or I shut her down).
You can modify the alternator to "fix" it; or just remember to rev up initially to wake it up.
