I hate to see a fire aboard a ship.
I was on the aircraft carrier Lake Champlain when it got on fire in port at Marseille, France. The fire was out of control for some 4 hours. We lost 5 sailors and 4 French civilians.
Apparently someone had vented the avgas system in port, which is an absolute No-No, An oil slick developed around the stern of the ship and then all it took was for someone to throw a cigarette butt overboard.
Thankfully, the fire never reached the flight deck. Being in port, all the airplanes were fueled up and spotted in rows on the flight deck. If the fire had hit even one airplane on the flight deck it would have been all over.
We were due to be relieved by the carrier "Randolph" in a couple of weeks, so they sent the Randolph over early. We patched up the "Champ" and headed for home.
