I was in the middle of writing a long reply and attaching a photo when our local tractor whisperer knocked at the door. Frank is somewhere north of 80 years old, and worked for years as a JD service tech. As he was tracing the circuits with his voltmeter he asked me why the "S" terminal on the starter relay was grounded to the frame. Duh. Of course, I'd flipped the connections so the starter relay trigger voltage was reversed. Swapped the connections and the tractor started right up. This is the second time that Frank's mere presence fixed the problem, without him ever using a tool. That's the sign of a true tractor whisperer.
Lessons I'm supposed to have learned: 1) Take a picture (or label) everything BEFORE disassembly 2) Attend to 1 problem at a time, keep the diagnosis as simple as possible 3) Don't assume it's the machine's fault- it's usually operator error and 4) Listen to your elders (even though I'm 60)
Despite all this, I remain a fan of the 24v JD starter. My previous 4020 had a 12v conversion, and that starter was barely able to spin the engine. This 24v one starts with a touch of the key.
