Sometimes the farmers don't have kids or the kids have been killed (many went to war and never came back), could be that they worked hard to give their kids a better life by sending them to college to be anything BUT a farmer, and sometimes the kids just don't have an interest. Might also be that the farmers got old, couldn't afford repairs, lost the farm and new owners don't care....many more reasons.
There was a barn on this property when we bought it. By the time we got moved here, we had 2 extremely wet years in a row - so wet that it was impossible to get the tractor anywhere near the barn. All the moisture caused a soft spot under the slab and, as there was no rebar, the knee walls split and sank. By the time ground was firm enough to get out there it was too late. Both the barn and the house had sat abandoned for 20+ years. Can't hardly tell there's a slab there anymore with all the growth coming through it.
