If it trashed out the timing gears then she is going to have to come out and the back timing cover / CASE will have to come off as the damage is not just the one gear you can feel , plus all them extra pieces and parts will have to be cleaned out . Been darn near fifty years now since i was in a Detroit . My last Detroit tear down was a 318 in a Mack R 700 when the one side started dumping water . Limped it home and myself a buddy rebuilt the one side after supper and was in bed by 11 so i could bed down at the mine by 3:30 , ran all day came home had supper and rebuilt the other side and in bed by 11 . That was a yearly deal with them , my buddy kept a well stocked parts room and had everything on hand , when he came he came with a rebuilt head kits and gaskets if it was V engine he came with two rebuilt heads . simple engine to work on but they plum scare me and i never start one with the valve covers on and vice grips on the rack and the shut down flapper on the blower .
