1) If the tractor originally had only a 3 terminal VR (BAT FLD ARM) you can still use the 4 terminal if wired correct, see above HOWEVER I have no idea if the VR will match and work properly properly with your genny.
2) If the tractor originally had ONLY a 2 wire Cutout Relay (BAT and ARM) its possible to convert to a full fledged Voltage regulator which has a Cutout Relay inside it HOWEVER the genny may or may not mate up properly with a Voltage Regulator. If it had that original and I was converting to a full fledged VR I would convert the genny to a 2 brush if its a 3 brush now.
3) The VR will be different if your genny is a 2 or a 3 brush even though its possible to make a crude conversion and it still works even if not engineering correct or perfect, Ive see it done
4) I have a suspicion the new VR may NOT be a match or original for that tractor ESPECIALLY if its a 3 brush and used a manual Low High light switch charge control system although it can still be converted (to a VR) if wired properly
5)Are you sure the tractor used a 4 terminal VR instead of a 3 terminal ???
6) Some older units that only had a 2 wire cutout relay used the Light switch for Low High charge control in which case the gennys FLD post wired up to the light switch. If that system is converted to a VR the gennys FLD wires instead to the VR's FLD terminal NOT the light switch

Today's Featured Article - Restoration Story: Fordson Major - by Anthony West. George bought his Fordson Major from a an implement sale about 18 years ago for £200.00 (UK). There is no known history regarding its origins or what service it had done, but the following work was undertaken alone to bring it up to show standard. From the engine number, it was found that this Major was produced late 1946. It was almost complete but had various parts that would definitely need replacing.
