I've been chasing a phantom problem in my buddy of 35 years, a Ford 2n. It's been running reliably forever, but a few weeks back it started dying on me and not restarting until the next day, seemingly draining the (new) battery to the point where there wasn't a reliable spark. I knew the genny wasn't working, and I suspected the cutout had failed and was draining through the genny. So I replaced them both, and got another ~4 hours of mowing done before the same thing happened. Realizing that I had neglected the old boy for too long, I decided to come clean and installed a new wiring harness, terminal block and resistor, coil, and yet another cutout, along with replacing the ammeter (which never worked). (When it runs, it runs great, so I haven't messed with the distributor, though I did give it new plugs and wires because they were pretty old.) It fired right up, and the ammeter as well as a separate voltmeter showed the genny was working. Ran great, for about half an hour, after which it died again and wouldn't restart, this time even if I charged the battery. I put a spark tester on and got no light, even though there's power at the coil terminal. So, I'm thinking I've killed (another) coil. But how? The new ballast resistor tests at just about 1 Ohm, so the coil shouldn't be getting too much or too little juice, right? Is there a way to test the coil besides measuring resistance? The one I removed doesn't show any continuity, but the one that I replaced it with (and that seems to have now stopped working) measured about 1.5 Ohms before I installed it, which I believe is spec. I feel like there's something obvious I'm missing. This is a new battery, but I'm tempted to take it in to see if there's some sort of intermittent short in it that might somehow cause this. Suggestions?

Today's Featured Article - Earthmaster Project Progress Just a little update on my Earthmaster......it's back from the dead! I pulled the head, and soaked the stuck valves with mystery oil overnight, re-installed the head, and bingo, the compression returned. But alas, my carb foiled me again, it would fire a second then flood out. After numerous dead ends for a replacement carb, I went to work fixing mine.I soldered new floats on the float arm, they came from an old motorcycle carb, replaced the packing on the throttle shaft with o-rings, cut new ga
