that is a cicada killer wasp, grew up with them around when I was little, also today, they dig in the ground, small mound, they look for locus to kill, and lay eggs inside of them, you must be getting ready for a locus swarm. we have tarantula hawks, here in Texas too. those killer wasps, I have heard that if they sting you on the head 3 times you could die, being a little kid , years ago , we would put fruit jars over the hole and trap them when they came out of their hole, they were always very mad at us kids.
