Sounds like a few things. Bearing to small and a lack of grease along with loose worn chain. The looser chain will tend to try and wrap as it turns and with it dry will tend to rust when idle off season and the bearing not being greased on a regular schedule. Also if the auger sets out in off season like most do water could be getting in through the seal causing it to rust the inside of the bearing components (balls and races). We used to have that problem with our dryer at one time as the seal would rust out then let the bearing go out.
