We put ours quiet a ways from the wall, whatever the manufacturer recommended, and then put ceramic tile on the wall. This is the stove at our cabin, the chimney is straight up, so I can brush it down into the stove, and then the pipe has to be lifted and vacuum out the top of the stove. Not the easiest to do, but these new high efficiency stoves are that way. A Lopi with a bypass damper is easier, that's what our son has, but they're way more expensive!
