I've got a 1975 jeep. It has a solenoid like you are describing. It has a 10 gauge wire tied into the wire coming from the battery which goes to the ignition switch to supply power for the switch. Then it has a 12 ga wire coming from the ignition switch to the S on the solenoid. The I terminal is wired to the positive side of the coil.
