Using ether for starting diesel engines

How many of you guys use ether to start older tractors with diesel engines? I have a '52 Super 55 and some of the Olivers after that came with an 1/8" hole for applying ether. What's the procedure? I have an unrelated story I figured you might get a chuckle out of. I live in British Columbia and we have scratch and win lottery tickets here. I bought some after filling up at the gas station. While driving down the road my wife was scratching some of the tickets. One ticket was called "Jokers Wild". It has card hands that you scratch reveal the faces of the cards. If you get 3 aces or 2 aces and a joker you win $10,000. My wife started scratching and revealed two aces and a "J". We started laughing and I admit I got a bit of a rush. We started thinking about what we would spend this fun money on. I quickly said "half of this money is mine you know (making sure at least $5,000 would be reserved for tractor restoration and implements). It just seemed so unbelieveable that we could be so lucky. Well, upon closer scrutiny we noticed it was a JACK. Boy, I have never made and lost money so fast. We had a really good laugh. On the bright side we did win $5 dollars on some other tickets.
