Ah Doug, you aint seen nuttin. About 4 days ago, I think it was stage #6, the helicopter that provides aerial footage of the Tour showed this from about 200 feet in the air: these farmers made a bike frame out of straw round bales. Then, for the "wheels", they lined up about eight tractors in a circle (line up in a circle, ha-ha) for each wheel (16 tractors total) and drove them around and around, giving the impression the wheels were in motion. I hope I have been able to explain this properly. This was one of the best Tour displays I have seen. Others have been bales that say "Viva Le Tour" or "Viva le Agricole" from the air. I watch the Tour 50% for the bike race and 50% for the stunning scenery and old churches and other structures, some which date all the way back to Roman times. The French seem to have strict land use rules as well. It appears on many occassions thathouses and such are in the 'village' and then the surrounding countryside is reseerved for crops fields and ag production. Not like in the USA where in many areas an open 100 acre fields without pole barns, houses etc is a rarity. It speaks to being able to be "food independent" which is incredibly important and largely taken for granted in this country.
