So, thistles like to push their nutrients up to the leaves and mostly the buds the first half of the year so it is very hard to actually kill thistles in the first half of summer.
In fall the thistles reverse flow and send nutrients down to that massive root system to store up nutrients for next year. So fall is a great time to kill them.
Sprays like 24D tend to mostly burn off the kraut above ground of plants, it won’t translocations so well down into that big root mass. These formulations tend to kill rapidly, and the herbicide can’t make it down to the big deep root mass in time.
Stinger is a better formulation that works down into the root a little better, kills a little slowly.
Roundup of course is a great translocation weed killer, it works slow and moves down into the bottom of the root and kills the plant from the bottom up. Aside from killing your grass too, this is about the perfect product to kill the nasty Canadian thistles.
So, there you are.
You want to spray in fall, and you want to use a slow trans locating weed killer.
