I'd like to thank all those who responded as you folks hit it right on the head. Special thanks to MSM for his diagnosis test 'cause when we loosened the screws to the timing plate (only about 1/4 turn each) it ran good enough to finish the job and drive it the 15 miles back to his house (albeit badly leaking diesel all the way) where it is now parked awaiting removal of the injector pump for rebuild.
