The last tractors made by IH were the 82 series(model #s ending in 82: 482, 582,782 etc.) However some of the 82 series were made by MTD. Most of the 82 series were painted red except the ones sold through dealers that only sold lawn & garden eq and did not have the ag tractor line. I worked for a dealer and the 82 series made by MTD seemed just as reliable. If you are really stuck on this, here is how to tell the IH made from the MTD made units. Look at the serial # plate, If it says International harvester, it was made by IH. If it says Cub Cadet Corp, it was made by MTD. The MTD units had the front and rear axles and rearend housing painted black instead of red. They also had an aluminum rear axle housing, which may sound cheap but the internal parts such as the axles and the differetial carrier were heavier and stronger than the IH built machines.
