Not sure about the 81 model but the 77 model we had at the mill had a 256 turbo engine with sims inline injection pump, same engine as used in the 7600 ag tractor.
Although a bit under powered it was a good loader that gave very little trouble.
About the only continuous issue we had was the brakes, the loader used Ford planetary axles with inboard wet disc brake, brake pressure was supplied by the tractor style power steering pump, the brakes worked great but the metallic brake dust would get into the hydraulic brake cylinders and cause them to leak and once the pump reservoir emptied out you had no brakes.
To repair the axle/axles had to be drained to remove the brake cylinders in order to replace the single lip seal inside the cylinder.
No a hard job but time consuming.
That loader was used in the log woods and sawmill yard so the brakes were used a lot and a lack of routine maintenance which may have added to the brake dust issue.
