The recommended is a minimum of 90 days at 2% their body weight on grain. Most prefer a high percentage of corn because it results in better marbling. I've heard good things about finishing on barley also, but have never tried it.
When I bring one in to start finishing, I start slow and work them up to 2% weight over a couple weeks. I end up feeding around 25 lbs of feed per head, per day. That's at least one full bucket, sometimes a bucket and a half. It depends on the feed. I keep that up for at least 90 days. My checking account is always relieved when butcher day comes, it sure gets expensive.
