If the spaces look like this;
They are for the spin out rims. They prevent the tire from hitting the fender when the rims are spun all the way in.
The dual wheel spaces are a solid piece of metal about 2 inches thick and require special stud extensions. The stud extensions for duals are very similar to the stud extensions used to install pie weights.
