I see the results that Loren and SV get with plowing and it impresses me. I also have enough hills here that I see the erosion on ground that I do not keep covered. My grandfather bought and built up ground in northern MO with rotation, green manure and plowing. I would think that a long term mix of rotation, plowing, no till and ripping would be optimum.
I have decided not to plow, mainly because I do not want to make the effort. I have had a lot of large equipment on fields and waterways this year due to debris removal from the Derecho, so plan to rip everything, then run soil finisher over it and early liberty link beans on all. I will then reestablish the grass and cover crop the fields. I have had some erosion even with no till, so plan to convert all my headlands to grass hay so I can contour plant. Moving forward, I will plant deep penetrating cover crops on the years I run beans, as winter comes too early here for successful cover on corn.
