McMaster-Carr Supply has 3/4-10 x 8 studs with 2" thread on each end for $3.12. These have a square wrench flat at the middle. In an alloy steel good for 125,000 psi. Or fully threaded in B7 alloy steel (rated at 125,000 psi) for $1.93. They also have threaded rod in the B7 alloy in 3,6 and 12 foot lengths but the 8" chunks are a better deal. To make them a machine shop would probably use the same alloy or one locally called "stress proof" that is strong and machines well. Gerald
