This old FORD truck,,just sits in the field now. BillyNY will remember pictures and posts of it in its working days at my neighbors place
But,,everytime I see it I Reminisce this story.
The old FORD was used a lot around the farm,,you could tell when it was coming down the road,,loud,,backfiring a bit,,and a bit smokey,,but a tough old bugger for sure.
Well known to be thirsty for gas too!
Near the end of its life,,it didn't like to start on its own,,and needed a tow to get going.
One day,,I was around,,and my neighbor had a load of fertilizer on it.He needed the truck,it would not start.
So,,he asked me to help. I had a choice,,the old truck,,or one of the big tractors,,which,,I really never ran either.
I Chose the tractor.
The neighbor explained,,we cant go down the hill,,the brakes take a while to work on the truck,,,sooo,,what he does is tow around the buildings, barns in cicles till the old girl fires up.
Dont stop,,he explained,,till the brakes on the truck get working,,,keep the chain taught,,very important....
I was kind of scared,,not used to the tractor,,,but pretty sure i could handle it.I climbed up on the tractor,,in circles we go,
The old girl fired up after three rounds,,,smoke billowing,,me pulling away,,till I was dragging it with the back wheels sliding in the gravel,,the neighbor waving stop!!
I was relieved,,it was a success,,and all was well!!
Back to NJ and work I Go,,not seeing anyone for two weeks
I see the old truck,,right where its sitting now,,with the hood open
It seems the next time,,,my neighbor got his brother in law to either tow,,or do the truck,,and it didnt go well
if you notice the grill,,,something went wrong,,,and poked through the radiator in the towing process. I think that was the demise of the old FORD,,thirsty for gas,,and water now,,it bit the dust,,and sits where it is now,,for quite a few years!!

Today's Featured Article - A Question for Dads This recent topic from the Tractor Talk discussion board is being highlighted because it is an awesome display of the caliber of individuals that have made this site their own. The young person asking questions received positive feedback and advice from total strangers who "told it like it is" with the care many reserve for their own kids. The advice is timeless... so although it isn't necessarily antique tractor related, it will be prominently displayed in our archives to honor those who have the courage to ask and those who have the courage to respond in an honest, positive manner.
