Emissions tampering has become a very dangerous game. The more recent generations of diesels have been designed from the ground up with the emissions systems integrated into the design and engine tuning. In particular, EGR. By removing the EGR system, you are changing the combustion characteristics within the engine. Wasn't really a problem on early EGR engines, but more modern engines are designed from the ground up to run with the EGR in mind, and removing it is actually quite detrimental to engine life. The vast majority of tuning shops have no clue how to program the injection timing and duration to maintain engine longevity with a disabled EGR system. Also, the chance of getting huge fuel economy and power gains is getting slimmer and slimmer with consecutive generations of diesels with ever improving emissions and injection technology.
How do I know all this? I fell for the hype and disabled the emissions systems on my Western Star with DD16 Detroit diesel. Almost non-existent fuel economy gains, no power gains, and two catastrophic engine failures within two years. After I sold that truck, I did a great deal of research into why my engine life was so low. What I found is what I explained in brief above.
Could the DPF burner and DEF be disabled down the road? Possibly. But I wouldn't do it if you still have warranty. And absolutely don't tamper with the engine itself.
