Boy the things you can learn on this site, huh?
I'm in the same boat as Old, that is I'd like to own one some day, but geez the price they bring these days. A couple decades back they had a program were if you participated in a couple NRA sanctioned shooting tournaments you could apply to buy a surplus M-1 from the US armory. I jumped through the hoops and was qualified to buy one but just couldn't afford the 165$ price tag at the time. Let me say that again ONE HUNDRED AND SIXTYFIVE measly dollars. Yep still kicking myself for that one.
My buddy sent his application in and got a well used one. Condition was pretty much a crap shoot. Heard toward the end of the program the quality of the rifles went up some what. Don't know how true that was, but even the beat up ones are going for a pretty penny. Money better spent on my latest hobby -antique tractors.
