Dear Ford 8n owner : this is a wise decision to move to 12 volts. I did it in 1966 and 32 years later and 2500 hours later, it is still working and I replace nothing but the battery. I installed a ford alternator and regulator (I suggest to use a Delco with integral regulator). You have to replace the pulley with a larger one to fit the existing fan belt. I replaced the Bendix with one that stay engaged until the motor is running. Now this is a negative ground machine. Change your ignition coil accordingly, means 6v positive ground to 12 v negative ground. That way, the spark will go from the central electrode to the ground electrode, not the opposite. Remember to change the orientation of the eletric cable passing close to the ammeter. That way, the ammeter will indicate positive when the alternator is charging. It will indicate negative even when charging if you forget to change the orientation of that cable. Use 5w30 engine oil in winter and I can ensure you that you can easily start your 8n at minus 35 degrees like I do, and you do not need a fergie to do that.
