Trail cameras are like us. All different . I use external batteries on all five of mine. One uses six volts only, others are 12 volt. Some require you still have the internal batteries in them and others do not.
Some require unhooking the external battery power lead to open cover of camera and some do not. I use rechargeable AA batteries in most along with the external batteries.
One I use lithium batteries because it is out all year long and alkaline don't like cold temp's even with aux batteries.
One camera is super sensitive to temperatures. When cold you have to set it to low sensitivity and when hot out set to high. Any little temp increase in cold temps it will take pictures constantaly, like 4000 in one night of nothing. Some are easy to set up and others are a pain. All different.
