For a time I tried it without books but found my knowledge lacking and it was frustrating having parts left over( oh well, probably doesn't need that anyway). Now I make copies of the pages I need so I don't have to worry about getting them dirty while I repair something. Last save my axx by the manuals job was when I had taken a hydraulic control unit apart a couple of months prior and realized with all the different sizes of balls and springs that my memory wasn't going to get it back together.
