The oil pump is belt driven, similar to a timing belt, its behind a cover on the back of the engine, the belt stays covered in oil. This is a maintenance item and if not replaced it will break, the engine will still run but with no oil pressure, you will have to watch the instrument panel for the oil pressure warning. Replacing this belt is not a DIY repair, you will need to remove the transmission and t-case on 4x4's.
The exhaust SCR/DPF, dual EGR are all new designs (over-engineered?) so you will be their beta tester on that. The SCR/DPF is mounted right off the turbo and under the hood, that's a ton of heat under the hood especially during regen. Also new the cooling system doesn't use a thermostat, it has a computer controlled rotary type valve that disperses coolant individually to certain parts or areas of the engine, nothing cheap and simple.
I'll stop with those things and I'm not trying to say this engine is a complete design failure but it will be very expensive to own and maintain unless you lease or dump it before the warranty expires. As with every new design it will take a couple years to work the bugs out (if possible) and they are already doing that on a few things.
This engine is not a workhorse engine, in fact it's not even an option in the lower trims, fleet or WT trucks, it is a premium option engine and will also be available in the Tahoe and Escalade
