#1 is in front, nearest the radiator, like almost every other tractor.

No different than any other other 4-cycle engine.
Align the crank gear marks. (If you turn the crank one turn the marks will be 180 off, turn the crankshaft one more turn and they again will line up. NOTHING to worry about.)
There's any number of places to buy a generic shop manual on the 'net, you must not have looked real hard, this very site has them, or look on ebay for an original DEERE manual (SM2001 and SM 2002, the MT supplement) (the best there is) or buy them direct from DEERE Techpubs by calling 1-800-522-7448.
