On this "button" you mention where the neg's come together, is there a bonding strap/physical connection to the tractor body/frame itself and maybe the mounting bolt[s] are part of the circuit? If there is no circuit from neg to tractor until this button is pushed in, its a return path for charging circuit, it should lock on until a release button is operated? As a kill switch, it is to remove the batterys from a possible discharge through the machines electrics, a gen excite/lights/accessories' and such when not in use. To really check it, start the machine and read the voltage at the starter hot post when rolling over..24vdc... and then when its running check the voltage across the battery posts..12.?? and then push the button in, battery voltage is now 13/14.?? : ground connection device for charging purposes. also you will have indication of how the voltage regulator is set, winter mode 14+vdc or summer mode13+vdc unless it has an alternator instead of the generator unit. hope it helps
