When I worked at John Deere dealer we pulled the pistons because they had run into problems with preassembled sleeve and pistons before. I never found any problems on the ones I pulled though that I remember.
Also, it is a whole lot easier to check the sleeve fit in the bore without a piston in it before you install the o-ring in the block. And speaking of o rings in the block, those grooves in the block, they were a problem on the older tractors. No easy fix either.
Both IH and Case you could repair with factory supplied parts. Not easy, but could do it. Never had to repair a IH block but of the few Case tractors we overhauled, we had to do some. Sent them out to do it.
