The front cat goes bad first and as it comes apart it clogs up the lower cat. It will run fine again when you replace the lower cat but it doesn't take long for it to clog again. I think I got two years out of mine after replacing the lower cat before it stranded me again. I have heard some people take a pointed steel rod and a big hammer and bust up the ceramic guts and dump it and put the cat back on. It runs fine but the check engine light will be on and it won't pass an emissions test if your state requires it.
