I didn't know the answer so I looked in the manuals. The steering box doesn't have a drain, the repair manual says to drain out the oil when rebuilding, after it is out of the tractor. There is a 1 1/4" expansion plug on the bottom of the steering box but the parts manual doesn't show an exact location. To add oil there is a square pipe plug on the front of the steering box where the steering tube goes in, to fill use extreme pressure gear lubricant: 80 wt in winter and 90 wt in summer, fill to top. I use gear oil in mine. That info comes from the Ford shop manual, the Ford operators manual says to use "grade "O" grease with a suction gun and fill to the level of the filler plug hole". Confused yet? The lubrication maintenance says to check and fill steering box through the square pipe plug, if needed, every 100 hours. The only opening for the water to get in would be down the steering tube under the steering wheel, I would advise keeping that area covered if it lives outside. Good luck and welcome to the site.

But, on the other hand, there is a secret language that our mechanical companions readily do speak. It is an interesting form of communication that involves all the senses of the listener. In this series we are going to investigate and learn the basic rudimentary skills of understanding this lingo.
