IH was king of the road in Monmouth County, central New Jersey in the 1940's, 1950's and 1960's. They had a very strong dealer network here. There was one weak John Deere dealer in Marlboro. There was also MF, Ford and Oliver. MF & Ford were never a big contenders but the potato growers in Mercer County, - north and south, liked Olivers, - seems mainly for their good cultivators and local dealers, as I remember. Eventually IH was fading by the late 1970's, the IH dealer went bust and my uncle shifted over to John Deere by 1976 because he thought they had a more integrated design and would be more reliable. New Jersey is now the black hole of equipment dealers but there is now still a lot of specialized agriculture requiring unusual equipment in our densely populated state.
