My current favorite pet is someone else's dog. He was sitting in the driver's seat, looking at me in the parking lot as I went into a sandwich shop where I'm a regular. He was sitting there just like your big German Shepherd but this was a pit bull mix.
There was only one other person in the store when I went in, so being nosy I asked about her dog. How old? What's his name? That kind of thing. Just being nosy. But I'm fascinated by owners and their pets, so my interest was genuine. The woman told me she'd had the dog only three months, and that it came from West Virginia where a rescue operation had put it up for adoption. Malnourished, and showing signs of dog-fighting injuries, the organization told her they thought the dog had been used as bait in the training of other, more vicious dogs for fighting. Terrible experience for any animal, to say the least.
But in a short time her dog Clark bonded with her, got along with her other pets, and was obviously eager to please, as she put it. Grateful dog, got a break in life, a second chance. So that's my favorite pet right now.
I have a couple cats and we get along ok. Much more independent than most dogs, they still show affection in their own way.
