It could be a number of things, but the most common problem is the shift motor located on the back of the t-case. Sometimes you can tap on the motor and it might start working. Keep in mind to be safe as possible since someone will need to be inside the truck with foot on brake or clutch pedal, tuning the switch to 2wd, while someone is underneath tapping on the motor. Also make sure it shifts to the desired position, it might get stuck in 4H or neutral too.
If you need to shift out of 4L in order to drive it somewhere you can remove the shift motor and turn the nub on the t-case. Just make sure the truck cannot roll on you since it might go into neutral.
