A regular fuel gauge is going to need a big gauge face for you to see it from the ground.
With a couple fittings; a shut off valve; and so petroleum quality clear tubing you can make a sight glass gauge that T's off your hose in the bottom of the tank. Just remember to keep the shut off valve close except when you are checking the level because if the tube develops a leak it will drain the entire tank on the ground. There is no need to run it to the top of the tank if the hose extends above the top of the tank. Some just run the hose around the side of the tank and make the hose long enough it hangs down on the other side of the tank.
Or you can spend the bucks and get a ready made sight glass like this.
