Chris, In addition to the ID tag originally mounted on the seat support or pedal cover, the serial number was also stamped in the engine block on a small, raised, cast square on the distributor side of the engine, just below the parting line with the head, about even with the mounting flange of the distributor/magneto. A good wire brushing should bring this number to light. Failing that, both my '44 'A' and '44 'B' have the exact date of manufacture of the rear wheels clearly stamped INSIDE the bands...of course this assumes that the rear wheels are original.
