Stores here have to scan your photo ID for any purchases of tobacco or alcohol. Since the cash register cannot see your physical appearance or judge your age, that is required as proof that the purchase is legitimate. They may do something similar for other regulated materials. Be thankful that they only asked for your birth date. If they scanned your ID, you might have to account for the whereabouts of the paint if graffiti shows up in your neighborhood.
I suppose the regulation is necessary to prevent some of the abuses that seem to keep happening. I do decline when they ask for my email or phone number at Harbor Freight when I make a purchase. I remind them that to buy a 10 cent fuse, Radio Shack wanted your life's history so to speak. Where is Radio Shack now?
