It's been so long ago, it's hard to remember the details all that clear. Dad and I used to buy and sell quite a few. I do know for sure that I bought my first one when I was in the fourth grade. It was an Allis Chalmers C with new rear tires and a cultivator. I bought it from the elementary school janitor. Gave $150 for it. I think I had $30 and Dad financed the rest. I might have paid him down a little over the year and a half or so that we used it to rake hay and cultivate. I remember I sold it for $225 and paid him off after that. I used to buy Case SCs and DCs, two cylinder Deeres and Massey Harris for a song back then.
First and only new one I ever bought was a 4040 Deere in 1981. I was 26 at the time. I used my dairy cows for collateral in addition to the value of the tractor. Gave $22,900 for it and paid 18.5% interest.
