That sounds about right for a 24v system. You want about 2.4 to 2.5 volts per cell.
It could be the alternator was overheating having to bring up dead batteries, something an alternator is not designed t do and is not recommended, even though it happens all the time.
Once the batteries are fully charged, it may clear the code. If he buys it, do some research, find out how to pull codes. He won't want to be paying for service trips every time it throws a code. Possibly buy a service manual, if available.
