I've never actually tried it, been scared away from the failure stories.
But not saying it won't work, like plowhand said, it worked for him.
A lot has to do with the preparation and the brand.
Another solution is to cut the bottom out of the tank and replace it. Chances are everything above the bottom is good, just the bottom rusted where the water collects.
And I have also seen the tank cut open, an aluminum fuel cell hidden inside, and the tank cosmetically closed to hide it. This works well for show and parade tractors.
